Gynecomastia: What is it? What causes it? And how to treat it

Sin categoría

Gynecomastia is the overdevelopment or enlargement of the breast tissue; it is a problem which affects many men. There are cases in which it is not overly noticeable and does not require treatment, but there are other cases in which the size of the breasts can be aesthetically unpleasing and can even result in psychological problems and a lack of self-esteem.

That is why, at Nordetia, we are going to explain what gynecomastia is, what causes it, and what the treatment options are.

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of a man’s regular breast size, caused as a result of breast tissue growth. It can occur on just one side, or on both, and can even appear to be unequal.

This problem can occur at any age but is most common during adolescence and after the age of 40.

Main causes

The cause of gynecomastia is due to a reduction in testosterone versus the levels of oestrogen in the body, due to a range of different causes, which complicate the functions of testosterone.

These hormonal changes can be natural and can occur at any age during a man’s lifetime, even just after birth. However, in these cases, the problem resolves itself in a relatively short period of time, usually less than a month.

During adolescence it is also common for hormonal changes to cause a male’s breasts to increase in size, this increase also disappears of its own accord over time. It is during adulthood that the problem is usually more permanent.

The frequent consumption of certain drugs or alcohol can trigger the growth of male breasts. The problem may also be due to tumours, other health issues, such as hyperthyroidism or kidney failure, among others, or it may even be due to the natural ageing process

Likewise, the use of certain medication, such as antiandrogens to treat prostate conditions, androgens, anabolic steroids, and other medication used to treat AIDS, can also cause gynecomastia.

How to treat gynecomastia?

The main way to treat gynecomastia is through surgery to reduce the patient’s breast size, improving the appearance of the chest. This procedure corrects the unsightly overdevelopment of the breasts and/or of the fatty tissue in the area.

The operation to correct gynecomastia is done under general anaesthetic, local anaesthetic, or sedation. It involves a small incision being made around the areola to remove the excess glandular tissue, fat, and excess skin. The scarring from this operation is almost  unnoticeable.

Can it be treated without surgery?

There are occasions in which gynecomastia can be treated with medication, depending on its cause. However, in many cases, breast growth does not respond to medication and the significant overdevelopment of the breasts or excess fatty tissue in the zone continues to be an issue.

When this happens, the only way to treat the condition is to undergo an operation to remove the excess tissue.
