How to prevent hair loss?

Hair loss medical treatment

One of the most frequent aesthetic concerns among both women and men is hair loss. That is why, at Nordetia, we are going to explain why we lose our hair, how to prevent hair loss, and what are the best possible treatments.

Why do we lose our hair?

Hair loss is mainly due to the reasons explained below:

The most common reason behind hair loss is genetics. It is essentially a disorder that develops over time and is known as androgenic alopecia. In the case of men it causes the hairline to recede and for women their hair becomes thinner and brittle.

Hormonal changes and other medical causes

There are a range of disorders which can cause temporary or permanent hair loss, such as hormonal changes during pregnancy, birth, the menopause or thyroids. These often cause alopecia areata which is related to the immune system.

There are cases in which certain events can cause us a lot of stress which is followed months after by temporary hair loss.

Pharmaceutical and supplement treatments

There is some medication which, among its side effects, can also cause hair loss. This includes those used for cancer treatment.

Some patients who undergo radiotherapy notice that following treatment their hair grows back thinner or more brittle.

Poor hair habits

Styling your hair too tightly or changing your hairstyle too often can cause traction alopecia. Treatments that use hot oil or perms can also cause hair loss. It is always important to be careful with these, as if a scar forms the hair may not grow back.

Tips to prevent hair loss

When hair loss is genetic it cannot be prevented. But there are some tips to follow to prevent hair loss for other causes:

  • Look after your hair, use a conditioner and do not brush it too hard (using a wide tooth comb will help with this), especially when the hair is wet (that is when it is mostly likely to break). Avoid aggressive treatments such as perms and do not use hair straighteners. It is also important to not overuse hairstyles which excessively pull on the hair.
  • Protect your hair from sun exposure and do not expose it to other ultraviolet light either.
  • Ask your doctor about any possible relationship between certain pharmaceuticals or supplements and hair loss.
  • Do not smoke, as it has been proven that tobacco is related with male-pattern baldness.

Treatments to prevent hair loss

The best treatments around today to prevent hair loss are the following:

Hair mesotherapy

Hair mesotherapy is a cutaneous transdermal therapy, which stimulates the stem cells of the bulb and activates growth. This leads to an increased growth rate and strengthens the hair.

After cleansing the scalp and applying a topical anaesthetic, growth injections are administered with substances such as Dutasteride and vitamins to help with capillary fragility, etc. these are each applied one centimetre apart from each other. Finally the Capiled Photolaser technology is used for 20 minutes.

Three continuous sessions followed by another three follow-up sessions are recommended. However, the frequency of these sessions will be based on the characteristics of each patient. Results can usually start to be seen after the second or third session.

Capiled Photolaser Technology

This technology causes photo-stimulation to revitalise the weakened hair follicles. Each session will end with a microinjection section into the scalp (hair mesotherapy) and will always be combined with other treatments in order to achieve the best possible results.

Capiled Photolaser technology reduces the inflammation of the tissue and increases the blood flow to the hair follicle, therefore helping to stimulate hair growth once again.

This is done by exposing the skin to an LED light for around 15-20 minutes which causes a biochemical reaction to help reactivate the body’s cells, including the capillaries. This treatment is administered nowadays using helmets, lamps, etc. It is a simple, relaxing, and non-invasive procedure that is completely pain free.
